Meta, the company that owns Facebook and Instagram, has announced its intention to invest more than $9.1 billion to build its first artificial intelligence data centre in Canada, which will be the largest facility the company operates outside the United States.

The centre will be built in Alberta and will rely on a natural gas-powered electricity plant, as part of the province's plan to attract AI infrastructure investment, according to the Associated Press.

The company confirmed that the centre will use a closed-loop cooling system that does not draw water from surrounding sources. Meta will also invest $42 million in developing local infrastructure, including roads and water networks.
