Strong rumours are circulating that Nasser Al-Khelaifi, president of French club Paris Saint-Germain, enjoys the backing of UEFA members to stand for the presidency of FIFA in elections scheduled for March 2027.
Current FIFA president Gianni Infantino has announced his candidacy for the upcoming elections and is understood to believe he has a strong chance of remaining in his post after 10 years at the helm of world football, according to French network Radio Monte Carlo.
The French network added that, as of now, no rival to Infantino has been announced.
It continued that, nonetheless, UEFA is looking for a candidate capable of forming a broad coalition of continental federations against Infantino in the 2027 elections, amid heightened tensions between FIFA and UEFA.
The network noted that numerous prominent names have been floated behind the scenes, most recently PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, whom some regard as a suitable figure to lead FIFA.
However, Nasser Al-Khelaifi is not seeking to launch a campaign to reach the FIFA presidency.
