Lionel Scaloni has equalled the record held by Carlos Salvador Bilardo as the coach with the most matches in charge of Argentina at World Cup finals, after guiding the "Tango" side in their 14th match against England in the semi-final of the 2026 edition, according to Opta statistics.

Scaloni led the Argentine national team in 7 matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, before recording his 7th appearance at the 2026 edition as well, bringing his total World Cup matches to 14 and drawing level with Bilardo at the top of the all-time list.

Bilardo had achieved that record across the 1986 and 1990 editions, guiding Argentina to the world title in Mexico 1986 under the captaincy of Diego Armando Maradona, then reaching the final again in Italy 1990 before losing the title to Germany.

Scaloni will become the outright record holder regardless of the result against England, as he will lead Argentina in one further match — either in the final against Spain or in the third-place play-off against France — to reach his 15th World Cup match.
