Jassim Rashid Al Buainain has announced his resignation as chairman of the board of the Qatar Football Association, ending a three-year tenure at the helm of the association, following the Qatari national team's elimination in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a statement published on his official social media accounts, Al Buainain confirmed that his presidency was marked by numerous challenges, noting that teamwork, determination, and dedication helped transform ambitions into tangible achievements — ones he said would stand as testament to the efforts made over the past years.
"The footprints left behind bear witness to what has been achieved and to the work that has borne real fruit. It was a period full of challenges, but through determination and dedication, ambitions became reality and goals that some thought were out of reach were accomplished."
"I announce my resignation after three years in which I served as chairman of the board of the Qatar Football Association."
Al Buainain extended his thanks to the board members and staff, affirming that he was honoured to have worked alongside colleagues who carried their responsibilities with integrity, and that the successes achieved were the natural result of collective effort and dedication.
"I leave today having had the honour of working with some of the most loyal colleagues, who carried their responsibilities faithfully — and success was the natural fruit of their efforts and devotion. To them I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation, and to all who believed that true progress is built through honest work, away from noise and narrow interests."
He stressed that the public interest was, and would remain, above all else, expressing confidence in the ability of sincere work to overcome all challenges, and stating that the achievements realised are proof that genuine intentions can fulfil desired goals.
"I leave office today, and what remains is loyalty to the pledge, pride in all that has been accomplished, and a prayer that the journey of Qatari football continues towards further success, progress, and prosperity."
Al Buainain's resignation comes shortly after Qatar's participation in the 2026 World Cup finals ended with a first-round exit, opening the door to a new era within the Qatar Football Association as it awaits procedures to select new leadership to manage the game's affairs in the coming period — one that holds significant continental and international obligations at the national team level.
