Veteran Brazilian star Neymar Junior is considering retiring from football following the announcement of the end of his international career, after Brazil's elimination from the 2026 World Cup.
Brazilian media reports indicate that, after scoring the only goal in a 2-1 defeat to Norway in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup, Neymar decided to retire from international duty with the national team.
Brazilian network UOL revealed that Neymar is currently on holiday with his family, during which he will reflect on his future, while those close to him confirm that the Brazilian star had been feeling disillusioned with the world of football even before his participation in the 2026 World Cup.
The network added that Neymar complained to a number of friends about feeling that his 15-year career with the Brazilian national team had gone unappreciated.
Neymar's contract with his Brazilian club Santos runs until next December, and there is speculation that the match against Norway, played on 5 July, will be his last.
The Brazilian network added that, although the most likely scenario is for Neymar to continue with Santos in the coming months, those close to him are hinting that this outcome is not certain.
It noted that Neymar currently has three options: the first is to honour his contract with Santos until 31 December; the second is to join a club with less pressure; and the third is to retire.
It concluded that a decision from Neymar is anticipated in the coming days, and he is expected to hold discussions with Santos officials — the club has not yet announced a date for his return to the squad.
