Cristiano Ronaldo bid farewell to his dream of winning the World Cup in tears, after Portugal were eliminated in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following a 1–0 defeat to Spain, in an emotional night that may have written the final chapter in one of football's greatest stars' careers at the global tournament.

Ronaldo was visibly overcome after the final whistle, as yet another chance to claim the only major title missing from his collection slipped away. Several of his Portugal teammates rushed to console him on the pitch in a scene that captured the harshness of an exit from a tournament that could be his last at international level.

Katia Aveiro, Ronaldo's sister, had hinted days earlier that the 2026 World Cup could be Ronaldo's final international appearance with the Portugal national team, describing the tournament as perhaps the star's "last dance", according to media reports.

The pain of the farewell was compounded by the fact that Ronaldo — despite his extraordinary career, record-breaking statistics, and major honours with club and country — remains without a World Cup title, a dream that has eluded him since his first appearance in the tournament, until Portugal's run was ended by Spain through a late goal.

Portugal's elimination left their supporters in a state of sorrow, particularly given that Ronaldo is considered a symbol of an entire generation of Portuguese football, with his name bound to the national team's most prominent moments over the years. Yet the World Cup has remained the one title that continued to evade him until the very end.
