Brazil's national team ended a 40-year streak without missing a penalty in a World Cup match, after Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland saved Bruno Guimarães's spot kick during the round of 16 clash between the two sides at the 2026 World Cup.
American referee Ismail Elfath awarded a penalty to Brazil in the 14th minute after Matheus Cunha, the Manchester United striker, was fouled by Norwegian defender Kristoffer Ajer inside the penalty area.
Vinícius Júnior initially took the ball before handing penalty duties to his teammate Bruno Guimarães, the Newcastle United midfielder, but goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland succeeded in saving the kick, keeping his net clean.
Nyland became the first goalkeeper to save a Brazil penalty in a World Cup match since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico, when Frenchman Joël Bats stopped Zico's spot kick in the quarterfinal encounter between the two sides.
The missed penalty was recorded as only the 4th in Brazil's history of penalty kicks taken during World Cup finals tournaments.
Brazil had reached the round of 16 after topping Group C with 7 points, edging Morocco on goal difference, following a draw with the Atlas Lions and then victories over Haiti and Scotland, before beating Japan 2-1 in the round of 32.
The winner of the Brazil–Norway match advances to the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the Mexico–England match.
