The United States national team received a major boost ahead of their anticipated Round of 16 clash against Belgium at the 2026 World Cup, after FIFA decided to suspend the ban imposed on striker and top scorer Folarin Palogun, making him eligible to feature in the decisive match.

Palogun had received a straight red card during the Round of 32 match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, after a challenge the referee deemed violent, resulting in a one-match suspension that would have initially ruled him out of the Belgium fixture. However, FIFA's Disciplinary Committee reviewed the incident, concluding that the challenge was not intentional, and decided to suspend the execution of the sanction for one year in accordance with Article 27 of the Disciplinary Regulations, with the player remaining under surveillance during that period.

Palogun is considered one of the standout stars of the American squad in the current tournament, having scored 3 goals and led his country to the knockout stages. FIFA's decision therefore came as welcome news for the coaching staff led by Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino, who will have his most important attacking asset back for the Belgium match.

Following the announcement of the decision, US President Donald Trump was quick to welcome it, extending his thanks to FIFA and declaring that the governing body had corrected what he described as the "great injustice" suffered by the player.

In contrast, media reports emerged suggesting that the White House had attempted to influence the decision. However, FIFA confirmed that its ruling was made independently and in accordance with its disciplinary regulations, without reference to any political interference in the matter.

Palogun's presence will give the United States additional attacking potency against Belgium, in a match in which the Americans are seeking to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since the 2002 World Cup, while Belgium aims to continue its push for the title.
