The England football team received a hostile reception upon arriving at their hotel in Mexico City, ahead of Sunday evening's round-of-16 World Cup clash against Mexico.

England had hoped to keep the location of their accommodation secret, after Mexico fans used loudspeakers, horns and motorcycles in an attempt to disrupt the sleep of Ecuador's players before the round-of-32 match, which the hosts won 2-0 last Wednesday.

But when the England team bus arrived at the hotel, hundreds of fans were waiting, with some booing and others chanting "Mexico".

One fan inside the crowd was also spotted holding up an England shirt.

Security measures outside the hotel were stepped up following the incidents of the previous week, which prompted complaints from the Ecuadorian football federation.

Security levels across the city were also raised after four people died during celebrations that followed Mexico's victory over Ecuador.

British news agency PA Media reported that the challenge facing England is not limited to the hostile atmosphere, as players will face an additional difficulty in Mexico City due to the altitude of the Azteca stadium, which stands more than 2,000 metres above sea level, meaning reduced oxygen levels in the air.

Mexico have lost only twice in their last 89 matches at the Azteca, winning 70 and drawing 17, and have not suffered a single defeat in 10 World Cup matches at the ground.

More than 100 riot police officers wearing bulletproof vests are guarding the hotel where the England team is staying, following the hostile reception the squad received.

A drone and a police dog are also being deployed near the hotel, while the England team bus stands outside.
