In a breathless, historic encounter, the Argentina national team claimed a thrilling 3-2 victory over Cape Verde after extra time, formally securing their place in the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup, where they will face Egypt in a highly anticipated fixture.

The first-ever meeting between the two sides, held on Saturday morning at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, was full of drama and competitiveness, as Cape Verde managed to embarrass the world champions and undermine their dominance, forcing a 1-1 draw at the end of normal time before the match extended into extra time.

The game featured an outstanding display from Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, who defended his net heroically and denied Argentina an early decisive win. Captain Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 29th minute, before Lisandro Martínez extended the lead in the 92nd minute and Cristian Romero completed the hat-trick of goals in the 111th minute. Cape Verde's goals were scored by Djeivý Duarte in the 58th minute and Cabral in the 102nd minute.

Both sides entered the match with expectations favouring Argentina, given the gap in resources and experience, while Cape Verde held firm to their ambition of producing a major upset in their first-ever World Cup appearance.

Argentina began the first half by imposing control over the flow of play, dominating possession as Cape Verde predictably sat deep. Despite this dominance, the Tango's players struggled to create genuine chances in the opening minutes, owing to the opponent's organised defensive shape and their policy of closing down space.

As Argentine pressure mounted, Lionel Messi fired a powerful shot that was saved by Vozinha, before the Argentina captain cracked the defensive code, receiving a precise pass from Lisandro Martínez, bringing the ball under control with skill before slotting it into the roof of the net to put his country ahead.

Enzo Fernández came close to doubling the advantage with a fierce strike from outside the penalty area, but Vozinha continued to shine and kept the ball out, leaving Argentina with a single-goal lead at half-time.

Messi's teammates continued to assert their authority at the start of the second half, while Cape Verde relied on counter-attacks. Molina squandered a clear-cut opportunity to extend the lead after a pass from Messi, before Djeivý Duarte equalised, benefiting from a pass by Ryan Mendes.

Following the equaliser, Argentina intensified their attacks, but Vozinha kept performing heroically, stopping a one-on-one chance from Messi and then brilliantly tipping away a direct free kick taken by the Argentine captain, preserving the draw until the end of normal time.

Argentina did not take long to retake the lead in the first period of extra time, as Lisandro Martínez scored the second goal just 2 minutes in, following a corner kick delivered by Messi. But Cape Verde kept fighting and levelled again through Cabral with a curling strike from a tight angle, before Cristian Romero settled the match by scoring the third goal, capitalising on a Messi cross from a corner kick.
