Egypt's national team wrote a new chapter in their footballing history, eliminating Australia on a penalty shootout 4-2 after a 1-1 draw through regular and extra time at Dallas stadium.

The Egyptian side advanced to the round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup for the first time, in the Pharaohs' best-ever showing at a World Cup, joining Morocco as the second Arab team to reach the last 16. Egypt now await the winner of the match between Argentina and Cape Verde.

Australia started the match strongly and threatened the Egyptian goal early when Christian Volpato unleashed a powerful shot in the 5th minute that struck the crossbar, before Egypt responded with greater composure, mounting organised attempts to exploit space and rely on swift attacking transitions between the lines.

Imam Ashour opened the scoring for Egypt in the 13th minute, rising to meet a precise cross from Karim Hafez and converting it with a superb header into the right corner of the Australian goal, giving the Pharaohs an early advantage to the delight of their fans.

The goal boosted Egypt's confidence, and Mustafa Zico came close to doubling the lead in the 21st minute when he broke clear on goal but fired wide of the post — though the assistant referee's offside flag was raised — while goalkeeper Mustafa Shobeir produced a brilliant save to deny Aziz Behich's dangerous attempt in the 35th minute.

At the start of the second half, Omar Marmoush squandered a clear-cut chance in the 46th minute after receiving a precise pass from Mohamed Salah, only to shoot wide of the post, before Australia equalised through an own goal by Mohamed Hany in the 55th minute.

Australia dominated large stretches of the second half, controlling possession and creating several attacking chances that troubled the Egyptian defence, but organised defending and Shobeir's brilliance prevented a second goal from going in.

Egypt made impactful substitutions, bringing on Haitham Hassan and Hossam Abdel Maguid in place of Mustafa Zico and Hamdi Fathi, as the team gradually regained its balance and increased its attacking threat, while the match's tempo rose with both sides exchanging chances continuously.

In stoppage time, Rami Rabia came close to snatching a winner after nodding a Mohamed Salah cross towards goal, but goalkeeper Patrick saved the attempt brilliantly, leaving the full-time score at 1-1 and sending both teams into extra time to decide qualification.

Extra time saw a clear advantage for Egypt, who intensified their attacking efforts in search of a decisive goal, but the Australian defence held firm against every opportunity, leaving the draw intact through both additional periods.

Egypt settled the penalty shootout 4-2, securing a historic place in the World Cup round of 16 for the first time and continuing their exceptional run in the tournament.
