Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has closed the door on resigning from his position following the shock of an early exit from the FIFA World Cup for the third consecutive time, launching a sharp attack on the referee who disallowed a goal for his team in extra time.
Germany lost to Paraguay on penalties 4-3, after the two sides drew 1-1 in regular and extra time.
Nagelsmann told ZDF: "I am available if the German Football Association wants me — my contract runs until 2028, and if the association does not want me to continue, it must inform me of that decision."
The German coach added: "I am not the type who runs away."
Nagelsmann's contract expires at the end of the European Championship, which will be held in the British Isles in two years' time. The 2026 World Cup was his first as a head coach at that tournament, having previously departed Euro 2024 — hosted by his own country — with a quarter-final defeat to Spain, who went on to claim the title.
Germany had exited the World Cup in the group stage in two consecutive tournaments: in 2018 under Joachim Löw, who had led the side to the title in 2014, and then under Hansi Flick at the 2022 World Cup. Both coaches continued in their roles after those failures.
Germany's elimination was not entirely surprising given the team's declining level since 2014, despite having topped their group in the first round.
Nagelsmann turned to the subject of a disallowed goal in extra time that would have put Germany 2-1 ahead, saying: "It is a shameful and ridiculous decision — like a joke. I have no idea what the referee saw."
He added: "It is a scandal by every measure. There is absolutely no infringement."
However, Nagelsmann also placed blame on his players, saying that build-up play had been far too slow.
