Scotland manager Steve Clarke has resigned from his post following his team's elimination in the group stage of the World Cup, the Scottish Football Association announced.

The Scottish FA said on social media: "Steve Clarke, the national men's team head coach, has resigned from his position. He has decided to bring an end to seven years at the helm of our most successful national team setup, following our participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup."

Scotland's elimination was confirmed after Croatia defeated Ghana, which had already secured qualification, in Group 12, meaning Clarke's side could no longer finish as one of the eight best third-placed teams in North America.

The 62-year-old coach led Scotland to their first World Cup finals appearance since 1998.

The team began their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Haiti in Group 3, before losing by the same scoreline to Morocco, then suffering a heavy 3-0 defeat to Brazil. Despite collecting 3 points, Scotland failed to reach the round of 32 on goal difference.

Clarke said: "The most emotional part of this farewell relates to my players — without them we would not have achieved any of the moments we have accumulated from 2019 until now."

He added: "They deserve all the praise and credit they receive, and it has been a true honour to be their coach."

He concluded: "Thank you for having me, and I wish my successor the best of luck."
