France manager Didier Deschamps has returned to his country's training camp at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston, after leaving following the death of his mother, the technical staff of the two-time world champions announced. The manager had left camp on Tuesday, travelling to France to attend his mother's funeral.
Deschamps is scheduled to lead today's training session on the pitches at the Bentley University campus in Waltham, Massachusetts, a day after France's emphatic 4-1 victory over Norway, which secured them top spot in Group I. The runners-up from the previous edition are set to face Sweden in the round of 32 on Tuesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
During Deschamps' absence, his assistant Guy Stéphan took charge of the French national team against Norway. Speaking after the match, Stéphan said: "I am thinking a great deal about Didier. We are happy he is returning quickly. The players did what they had to do — they were affected by the situation. They heard Didier speak to them and tell them he was in mourning and had to leave. And of course, given the close bond they have with him, they wanted to put in a good performance for him."
