Bayern Munich honorary president Uli Hoeness has sharply criticised the FIFA World Cup being held in the United States, Mexico and Canada, which has made headlines due to soaring ticket prices.
The 74-year-old former player of the Bavarian club said: "I think this World Cup represents a complete failure for football." He added: "$2,000 for a ticket in an ordinary seat — where are we headed with this? I have always supported commercial marketing, but not in this form. I will not support it by buying tickets."
Hoeness added that he could have stayed for free during the tournament through an acquaintance of his in Florida. He said: "But I had absolutely no desire to travel to the World Cup, and even if I had wanted to, I would have lost interest when I was told the location of the house where I would be staying." According to Hoeness, the accommodation that was offered to him was just five minutes away from the home of US President Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago.
