Canada secured a historic 6-0 victory over Qatar at BC Place in Vancouver in the second round of Group B matches at the group stage, recording their first ever win at a FIFA World Cup.

Canada moved up to 4 points to top the group on goal difference ahead of Switzerland, while Qatar suffered a heavy blow following a lacklustre performance that fell well short of the standard they had shown in their opening match.

The goals were scored by Cyle Larin (16'), Jonathan David with a hat-trick (29', 45+3' and 90+2'), Nathan Saliba (64'), and Mohamed Mannai with an own goal (75').

Qatar were reduced to nine men following the dismissals of Homam Al Amin (33') and Assim Madibo (54').

Canada started the match with intense pressure, taking full advantage of home ground and crowd support. They came close to opening the scoring early, but goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Nada kept them out with a superb save in the 7th minute.

The Qatari defence did not hold out for long, however, as Cyle Larin opened the scoring in the 16th minute after following up a rebound off goalkeeper Abu Nada and slotting the ball into the net.

The hosts continued to dominate proceedings, and Jonathan David doubled the lead in the 29th minute with a powerful shot from inside the penalty area that found the bottom-left corner of the Qatari goal.

Qatar's troubles worsened in the 33rd minute when left back Homam Al Amin was sent off for fouling a Canadian attacker, leaving the Maroons to play on with ten men.

Canada capitalised on the numerical advantage and added a third goal in first-half stoppage time through Jonathan David, who converted inside the area to score his second goal of the match in the 45+3rd minute, ending the first half with the hosts in comfortable control at 3-0.

Qatar's difficulties deepened in the second half when Assim Madibo received a straight red card in the 54th minute following a challenge on Ismaël Koné, leaving Qatar with just nine men for the remainder of the match.

Canada made the most of their numerical superiority as substitute Nathan Saliba scored the fourth goal from a direct free kick in the 64th minute.

The fifth goal arrived in the 75th minute when defender Mohamed Mannai turned the ball into his own net, before Jonathan David completed the rout with his hat-trick goal in the 90+2nd minute.
