A car carrying supporters of the Argentine national team was struck by gunfire in Kansas City, Missouri, as the fans were on their way to watch Argentina's match at the 2026 World Cup. The Uber driver was among those wounded in a series of shootings that swept the city and left one man dead, according to the Associated Press (AP).

Police said the Uber driver, who was transporting Argentina fans, was among four people injured in the series of shootings in Kansas City, Missouri. Authorities are continuing to search for a 22-year-old suspect described as armed and dangerous.

Five shooting incidents occurred within a short period of time across an area spanning approximately 5 miles, including three incidents on highways 70 and 670, which run through the centre of the city.

All of the shootings took place at least 4 miles from Arrowhead Stadium, which hosted Argentina's 3-0 victory over Algeria in the opening round of Group 10 at the 2026 World Cup.

Two American fans of the Argentine national team told Argentina's newspaper La Nacion the details of the incident, confirming that a car pulled up alongside them before a person inside fired two shots at the Uber vehicle they were travelling in, wounding the driver in the leg.

The two fans said they initially thought the sound was caused by a tyre blowout, before realising the driver had been shot. They then went with the other passengers to give their statements to police, who subsequently transported them to the stadium in patrol cars.

Police Chief Jacob Bichena confirmed that the Uber driver's injury was not serious, adding that the victims reported they were driving on the roads when their vehicles came under fire.

Police announced that three adults and a minor were injured in the various incidents and taken to hospital, while another man died of his wounds after being found shot following a collision between his car and a utility pole on Truman Road.

Investigators believe the shootings are linked to a single suspect, as they occurred in succession from west to east before police tracked him to a home in the Independence suburb, where he was not found.

Kansas City, Kansas police revealed that authorities had also issued an arrest warrant for the suspect in connection with a separate incident involving unlawful discharge of a firearm.
