A 1-1 draw settled the match between the Czech Republic and South Africa on Thursday evening, in the second round of Group 1 fixtures at the 2026 World Cup finals, with each side collecting its first point in the tournament and keeping its hopes of progressing to the second round alive.

Both teams had entered the match under the pressure of opening-round defeats, with South Africa falling 2-0 to Mexico and the Czech Republic losing 1-2 to South Korea, making victory a shared necessity for both sides.

The Czech Republic began the match strongly and established a clear advantage from the opening minutes, threatening Ronwen Williams's goal through Patrik Schick, before converting their ideal start into an early goal in the 6th minute. Michal Sadílek capitalised on a pass from Alexandr Soják inside the penalty area to finish with his left foot into the net, giving his side the lead.

The Czech Republic maintained their advantage throughout the first half, benefiting from the movement of Schick and Adam Hložek, while South Africa managed only sporadic attempts, most from outside the area, without genuinely threatening the goal of Matěj Kovář, as the first half ended with the Czech Republic ahead 1-0.

At the start of the second half, the Czech Republic came close to extending their lead on more than one occasion, as Williams saved a shot from Lukáš Červ and then cleared a dangerous header from Schick, before continuing his outstanding performance to keep his side's hopes intact.

South Africa gradually responded by increasing their attacking tempo following the manager's substitutions, beginning to penetrate Czech territory more frequently. Aubrey Modiba and Thabelo Masike wasted two chances from outside the area, before substitute Evidence Makgopa tested the alertness of goalkeeper Kovář with a powerful header in the 74th minute.

The turning point came nine minutes from time, when the ball struck the hand of Pavel Šulc inside the penalty area following sustained South African attacking pressure, prompting the referee to award a penalty after reviewing the incident. Teboho Mokoena stepped up to convert it successfully in the 83rd minute, driving the ball into the left corner of Kovář's goal to equalise.

The Czech Republic attempted to reclaim the lead in the closing minutes, pressing through set pieces and crosses, but efforts from Jaroslav Zelený and Lukáš Provod lacked accuracy, while South Africa almost snatched victory had Kovář not saved a shot from Relebohile Mofokeng.
