England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane has claimed a unique record in World Cup history, becoming the tournament's all-time leading scorer from the penalty spot.

Kane scored England's opening goal against Croatia in their Group 12 first-round match at the 2026 World Cup, and added a second goal before the end of the first half, which finished 2-2.

Kane's goal was his 5th from the penalty spot in World Cup history, moving him clear at the top and breaking the tie with 4 players who had each netted 4 World Cup penalties.

Before the match, Kane had been level with Argentina's Gabriel Batistuta, Portuguese legend Eusébio, Dutch forward Rob Rensenbrink, and current Argentine legend Lionel Messi — who recently became the tournament's all-time top scorer with 16 goals, level with former German star Miroslav Klose.

Kane also surpassed 200 goal contributions since joining Bayern Munich two seasons ago, reaching 201 across club and international appearances in 178 matches, after netting twice against Croatia.

The Bayern Munich star also drew level with Norwegian counterpart Erling Haaland in terms of total goal output across club and country this season, with both players having scored 60 goals.
