Congolese forward Yoane Wissa has written himself into his country's football history by scoring the Democratic Republic of Congo's first-ever goal at a FIFA World Cup finals, equalising for his side in the first half against Portugal to make it 1-1 in Group 11 of the 2026 World Cup.
Wissa's goal came from a close-range header that nestled in the upper-left corner of the net, following a precise cross by Arthur Masuaku from a corner kick, giving his country a share of the spoils by the end of the first half.
The goal carries historic significance for the Democratic Republic of Congo, who are appearing at the World Cup for only the second time, having made their debut in 1974 under the name Zaire — a tournament they exited without scoring a single goal. Wissa has thus stamped a historic moment on the record of Congolese football, placing his country's name on the list of World Cup finals scorers for the very first time.
