Barely more than 20 seconds had elapsed since Romelu Lukaku stepped onto the pitch when his strength and persistence forced Egyptian defender Mohamed Hany to turn the ball into his own net, underscoring just how important the striker is to the Belgian national team at the FIFA World Cup.
Belgium drew 1-1 with Egypt in Group G on Monday, after Imam Ashour had given the North African side the lead in the first half.
Belgium had been struggling to find an equaliser when the powerful Lukaku entered the game and made an immediate impact, drawing the attention of two defenders while Hany turned the ball into his own goal.
The striker spent much of last year away from the game, having played just 69 minutes for Italian club Napoli during the past season.
But since returning to action with Belgium in two friendly matches in June, Lukaku has been proving his value.
He scored his 90th international goal in a 2-0 win over Croatia, and set up a goal after coming on as a substitute in a commanding 5-0 victory over Tunisia.
The goal against Egypt may not be officially credited to him in the record books, but he was its decisive influence.
The impact substitute
Lukaku is still not physically ready to start matches after his prolonged absence from the game, but Belgium hope he will soon transition from an impactful substitute into a first-choice starter.
