Luis de la Fuente, the head coach of the Spanish national team, has said that Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will not feature in the starting lineup for the team's first match at the 2026 World Cup against Cape Verde, which is scheduled to take place later on Monday.
De la Fuente said on Sunday that he will decide when the two players get their minutes based on how the match unfolds, particularly following their recent return from injury.
Speaking about Barcelona star Lamine Yamal, De la Fuente said: "The good news is that Lamine Yamal is fine and ready. He was in good shape in training — he is ready to play but he will not start from the beginning."
Spain are the heavy favourites in Monday's match and are also among the contenders to win the title. They will play their next two matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group B.
Although Cape Verde are considered the underdogs in the group, De la Fuente praised the team and warned that the match would be difficult.
"They have a wonderful, well-organised tactical structure, and the players are fast with tremendous physical strength," he said. "They will be a surprise. It will be a battle even if we win it."
