Brazil and Morocco played out a 1-1 draw at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey in the opening match of both sides' 2026 FIFA World Cup campaigns.

Each team claimed its first point in Group C, which also includes Haiti and Scotland.

Morocco let slip the chance to make history as the first Arab national team to defeat Brazil in an official match, while the "Samba Dancers" preserved their unbeaten record in World Cup opening fixtures dating back to 1934.

Morocco took the lead through Ismail Saibari in the 21st minute, before Vinícius Júnior equalised for Brazil in the 32nd.

The match began with clear Moroccan dominance in midfield, combining good possession and tactical organisation, as coach Wahbi's side relied on a high press against the Brazilian players.

Confidence was evident among the "Atlas Lions", who took the attacking initiative early on and threatened the Brazilian goal with a shot from Nayef Aguerd in the 6th minute that was pushed away by goalkeeper Alisson Becker, followed by another effort from Achraf Hakimi that narrowly missed the post.

Ismail Saibari converted Morocco's superiority into a goal in the 21st minute, latching onto a through ball from Diaz to find himself one-on-one with the keeper and lobbing the ball into the net as the Brazilian goalkeeper came off his line.

Achraf Hakimi came close to doubling the lead in the 27th minute with a powerful shot that passed just beside the right post, as Morocco continued to dominate.

Vinícius Júnior drew Brazil level in the 32nd minute with a precise strike into the far corner of Yassine Bounou's net.

Yassine Bounou then saved his goal from a certain strike in the 45+2nd minute, denying a dangerous shot from Lucas Paquetá, as the first half ended 1-1.

The second half was a complete contrast to the first, with Brazil taking control after coach Carlo Ancelotti addressed the midfield issues and the sluggishness of the Casemiro and Lucas Paquetá pairing by bringing on Fabinho and Militão.

Morocco's performance dropped relatively as Brazil improved considerably in the second half, threatening Yassine Bounou's goal on multiple occasions.

Attacking attempts from the "Atlas Lions" were largely absent, while the Moroccan goalkeeper shone in repelling several Brazilian efforts.

The referee added 10 minutes of stoppage time, but produced no further goals, as the match ended in a 1-1 draw with each side taking one point at the start of their World Cup journey.
