FIFA has announced a change to the identity of the scorer of the first Arab goal at the 2026 World Cup, being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Qatar scored the Arabs' first goal at the tournament in their match against Switzerland, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Saturday evening, in the first round of Group B.
Al-Annabi secured their first point in World Cup history thanks to a goal credited to Boulam Khokhi in the 94th minute via a header, while Switzerland had taken the lead through a Breel Embolo penalty in the 17th minute.
However, FIFA indicated on its official website that Qatar's goal was in fact an own goal scored by Switzerland's Miro Muheim.
Muheim, a defender for German club Hamburg, came on as a substitute in the 88th minute in place of teammate Ricardo Rodriguez, only to cost his national team two points.
In the second round, Qatar will face Canada — one of the co-hosts alongside the United States and Mexico — who began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, leaving all four teams level on one point.
