The match between the United States and Paraguay, in the first round of Group 4, witnessed the first own goal of the 2026 World Cup.

The American national team took the lead in the 7th minute through an own goal, after Paraguay's Damián Bobadilla inadvertently put the ball into his own net.

The ball struck Bobadilla's feet inside the six-yard box as he attempted to clear a shot from a United States forward.

The goal is the 55th own goal in World Cup history, with 54 own goals having been recorded across all previous editions before Bobadilla's strike in the current tournament.

The first own goal in World Cup history was scored in the inaugural edition held in Uruguay in 1930, in the match between Chile and Mexico, and was credited to Mexican player Manuel Rosas, who scored it in the 51st minute.
