Paolo Maldini has agreed to take up the new post of Technical Director of the Italian Football Federation, a position created specifically for him, as the federation begins its mission to rebuild the national team.

According to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the AC Milan and Italy legend accepted the offer made by Giovanni Malagò, the federation's new president, after a lengthy wait, signing a 4-year contract under terms described as favourable to the Italian Football Federation.

Maldini will serve as Technical Director and head of 'Club Italia', an unprecedented role within the federation, carrying broad responsibility that goes beyond appointing the next coach to encompass overseeing the entire national team programme.
