Godolphin's horse Sovereignty returns to Churchill Downs for the first time since his historic Kentucky Derby triumph, as he contests a strong edition of the Grade I Stephen Foster Stakes in an evening billed as a clash of giants. Sovereignty will face an elite field of America's leading racehorses, headed by White Abarrio, winner of the Breeders' Cup Classic, and Magnitude, winner of the Dubai World Cup, alongside Baeza.
Having given Godolphin its first Grade I Kentucky Derby title — known as the Run for the Roses — last May, Sovereignty continued to make history by becoming the first horse to combine wins in the Grade I Kentucky Derby, the Grade I Belmont Stakes, the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes, and the Grade I Travers Stakes.
The son of Into Mischief, trained by Bill Mott, was denied the chance to add to his achievements when a fever kept him out of the Grade I Breeders' Cup Classic. His accomplishments were recognised at the 2025 Eclipse Awards, where he was crowned Horse of the Year in the United States as well as Champion 3-Year-Old Male.
Sovereignty returned to the track in the Grade II Aqueduct Oaklawn Handicap in April, finishing second by 2 lengths behind White Abarrio — a run widely regarded as a preparatory outing ahead of his return to top-level competition.
Sovereignty has previously had the measure of his main rivals: Magnitude, winner of the Emirates airline-sponsored Dubai World Cup, finished well behind him in the Grade I Travers Stakes, while he has beaten Baeza on 3 occasions during the last season, most notably in the Grade II Jim Dandy Stakes, where Baeza was runner-up by a length.
Trainer Bill Mott said: "Sovereignty came into the Oaklawn Handicap in very good shape, but the one thing was that he was coming back from an eight-month layoff — that's a long time for any horse to be away. He still ran very well, but he ran into a horse that was spot-on ready in White Abarrio. With that race under his belt, he should be better here. All the other signs are good — he's eating well, he's training well, his workouts have been good. I feel very confident about him."
