The filly Précieuse claimed the Group 1 Coronation Stakes, a fillies' contest run over 1,600 metres on the fourth day of the Royal Ascot festival in the United Kingdom. The evening was attended by Shaikha Hessa bint Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Sheikh Maktoum bin Majid bin Obaid Al Maktoum, and a number of owners, trainers, and racing enthusiasts.
Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien and jockey Ryan Moore continued their fine form for a second consecutive day as Précieuse flew to the most important title of the third day of the royal carnival, recording a time of 1:39.58, winning by a length and a half from runner-up Tólainn, representing the Shadwell silks, with True Love finishing third.
Attention now turns to the closing day of the festival and the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over 1,200 metres, which will feature UAE-owned horses, most notably Al Mirqab for Shadwell and Powerful Glory under the colours of Sheikh Rashid bin Dalmook Al Maktoum. The race will also see participation from Irmão for Ziad Kaldari and Sayyidat Daryan for Jaber Abdullah.
On the fifth day of the festival, the Godolphin trio of Maurice Dancer, Avicenna, and Catullus will bid for a first Group 3 win in the Jersey Stakes, which will also feature America Queen for Jaber Abdullah.
Maurice Dancer, a son of Palace Pier, lost by just half a head in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood last season before recording an impressive four-length victory in the listed Stonehenge Stakes at Salisbury last August. He returns this season under the joint charge of John and Thady Gosden.
Avicenna also boasts a solid pattern record, having won a listed race at the St Leger Festival at Doncaster under trainer Roger Varian, edging out Hankilu, who has continued his strong form this season by finishing third in the Group 1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois.
Despite finishing runner-up in the Group 3 Craven Stakes on his return at three, Avicenna failed to match expectations in the Group 1 2,000 Guineas, where he was unable to keep pace with his rivals.
Meanwhile, Catullus, trained by Charlie Appleby, enters the contest with high ambitions after a comfortable win in a handicap at Goodwood last month, following a fourth-place finish in his only previous Group 3 start in the Tattersalls Stakes last September.
