UAE professional long-distance cyclist Mohamed Salem Al Merri is preparing for the final stage of his build-up to the 12th edition of the Transcontinental Race, one of the toughest cycling events in the world. The race launches this month from Norway and finishes in Greece, covering approximately 5,000 kilometres. Al Merri aims to represent the United Arab Emirates with distinction, raise the profile of endurance cycling, and encourage young people to take up the sport and embrace sporting challenges.
Speaking to Al Bayan, Al Merri said: "I am preparing to compete in the 12th edition of the Transcontinental Race, which is considered one of the hardest cycling races in the world. The start will be in Trondheim, Norway, and the finish in Kalamata, Greece, covering a distance of approximately 5,000 kilometres. The race relies entirely on endurance, with each competitor personally responsible for planning their route, managing nutrition, sleep and maintenance, without any support team."
Al Merri added: "I am currently based in the Tyrol region of Austria for a pre-race training camp, and I am undergoing daily training sessions in the Alps to raise my physical readiness. I have also carried out trials to fine-tune the bike to suit a race spanning thousands of kilometres, and I have tested nutrition, equipment and recovery ahead of travelling to Norway." He noted that cycling is an enjoyable journey that goes far beyond simply turning the pedals, and advised anyone wishing to enter races to commit to continuous training and observe safety rules.
Al Merri also stressed that participation in cycling races demands patience, endurance and physical fitness, describing it as a sport that requires a well-rounded individual — one who possesses not only physical strength and stamina but also mental resilience. He said psychological preparation is therefore a key element, as is the ability to adapt to camping conditions. He recalled having previously been forced to camp in areas frequented by bears, in addition to coping with rainy weather and other challenging circumstances.
