Egypt national team manager Hossam Hassan has lifted the lid on events dating back to his time as coach of Zamalek, confirming that he sought to sign Mohamed Salah when the player was at Arab Contractors, having been convinced early on of his technical abilities. Hassan recounted the story during an appearance on the programme Ma'akom with presenter Mona Al Shazly.

During the interview, Hossam Hassan also criticised the reliance on foreign coaches in Arab football, arguing that some are more concerned with contracts and financial gain than with results or supporters' feelings. He said a foreign coach "picks up a pen and paper on the touchline and does not care whether the team wins or loses, because he gets his money in the end."

When Mona Al Shazly asked what some coaches actually write on those pieces of paper, he replied: "Can I tell the truth? In many cases, what they write amounts to nothing more than a performance put on to convince those around them that they are planning something, while in reality it is completely different."

The Egypt manager then turned to the early career of Mohamed Salah, revealing that he had tried to bring him to Zamalek while he was in charge of the club and Salah was still playing for Arab Contractors.

Hossam Hassan explained that Mohamed Salah was among the players he had requested to strengthen Zamalek's squad, adding that he had been convinced of his talent and technical ability from his earliest appearances and had wanted to bring him to the club. He confirmed that Salah is aware of this episode.

Hossam Hassan praised the Egypt captain, affirming that their relationship is built on mutual respect, and describing him as a model of integrity and professionalism both on and off the pitch.

He added that Mohamed Salah represents a true role model for young people, not only because of his footballing achievements but also for the respect and discipline he displays, stating that he is a credit to any team or organisation he belongs to.
