We are at a dangerous turning point in Iranian behaviour in the region.
We are confronted with the following:
1 – Behaviour rooted in the logic of "inevitable retribution" that humanity must pay as a consequence of the assassination of former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, according to a message recently attributed to his son, the current Supreme Leader.
2 – Unjustified behaviour in violation of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, through attacks on the safety and freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
3 – Persistent demands to control the Strait of Hormuz in contravention of what was agreed upon in the memorandum of understanding.
4 – Reckless aggressions against five Arab states without any security or political justification.
5 – The continued aggression against the State of Qatar, which played an important role and exerted considerable effort as a mediator between Tehran and Washington, with no regard for the passing of the former Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa, may God have mercy on him.
We are now engaged in a regional war that contradicts the slogans and agreements that speak of a desire to achieve a ceasefire and bring peace and stability to the region.
Iran clings to Article 5 of the memorandum of understanding between itself and Washington, claiming that its interpretation of this article grants it the right to administer the Strait of Hormuz for its own benefit.
Yesterday, Iran targeted a vessel flying the Cypriot flag with a cruise missile — an explicit threat and a flagrant violation of all its commitments.
Iran cannot continue in this manner, speaking of victimhood and demanding the lifting of sanctions while engaging in reckless and malicious aggressive behaviour.
We are now on the edge of the abyss.
