Every summer, as temperatures climb, the sun becomes a daily test of a person's ability to keep working. While many seek shade or air conditioning, there are those who spend long hours under the open sky.
These people usually ask for very little, and perhaps a cold bottle of water in a moment of exhaustion can say to them what words cannot.
Perhaps the finest quality of our society is that humanity is measured by the way we treat those who give their effort in silence. Compassion is a daily behaviour we learned from the hadith of our noble Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him: "The parable of the believers in their mutual love, mercy, and sympathy is that of one body: when one limb ails, the whole body responds to it with sleeplessness and fever."
This compassion is embodied in the "Neighbourhood Fridge" campaign launched by Farjan Dubai with the support of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, and in cooperation with Saqia Al Emarat and the UAE Food Bank.
It is a community message affirming that generosity is measured by our capacity to feel for others. What is placed inside those fridges is, at its core, a sincere expression of appreciation for every hand that works with dedication, and for every person who continues to perform their duty despite the harshness of the weather.
It was no coincidence that the initiative succeeded year after year, attracting volunteers, partners, and institutions. Genuine values possess an extraordinary ability to spread, because they speak to what all people share: a sense of responsibility and a desire for society to be warmer and more compassionate. Water may be the simplest thing one can offer another person, yet it becomes the greatest gift when it carries a message that says: "We see you, and we appreciate what you do for us."
A guiding thought:
The UAE has taught us that the value of development lies in the human being, and that every development project requires a framework of values.
