During our travels, tours and meetings in many countries around the world, something would recur with striking regularity. The moment those we met learned that we were from the United Arab Emirates, the conversation would turn spontaneously to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul. Some would recall a humanitarian gesture; others would bring up a development project that had reached their country; still others would speak of his wisdom, or of the image of an Arab leader whose name became synonymous with generosity, tolerance and the building of human beings. Every time I listened to these conversations,
I realised that Sheikh Zayed had ceased to be merely a great national figure in the memory of Emiratis. He had become part of the human memory of many peoples who came to know the man through his impact, before they knew him through books, documents and photographs.
That exceptional presence in the consciousness of people took shape over long decades of work, vision and giving. When Sheikh Zayed is mentioned, what comes to mind is the story of a leader who was able to steer a project of unity and development that became a model to emulate. Also recalled is the life of a man who believed that building nations begins with building people — which is why his name became linked to education, health, development, the empowerment of individuals, and the elevation of their dignity and quality of life.
Sheikh Zayed, may God have mercy on him, regarded the human being as the most important wealth in any society, and saw in knowledge, science and investment in minds the shortest path to the future — a vision whose fruits the United Arab Emirates continues to reap to this day.
When we contemplate the journey of the Union, we understand that Sheikh Zayed thought with the mind of a statesman who could see coming generations before others could. Together with his brothers, the founding rulers, he succeeded in transforming the dream of unity into a reality that has become one of the most successful models of unification in the modern Arab world. The fruits of that historic decision continue to be felt in the lives of the millions who live on UAE soil and enjoy the security, stability and development that have been achieved.
In the Gulf memory, Sheikh Zayed holds a special place, bound to his deep conviction that the strength of the Gulf derives from the unity and cohesion of its people. His efforts in supporting the progress of the Gulf Cooperation Council marked a pivotal moment in the history of the region, driven by his belief that a shared destiny requires a shared vision and a shared will. For this reason, his calls for rapprochement, cooperation and mutual understanding have remained alive in the consciousness of Gulf citizens to this day.
Arab memory, too, preserves another image of Sheikh Zayed — that of a leader who carried the concerns of his nation in his heart and engaged with its causes in a spirit of responsibility and moral commitment. From Palestine to Lebanon, from Egypt to Morocco and Yemen and other Arab states, the hands of the UAE extended with generosity, support and development, driven by a human and pan-Arab vision that believed the stability and prosperity of the region to be a shared responsibility.
Perhaps what most distinguishes Sheikh Zayed's legacy is that it extended to the humanitarian dimension, which made his name known in every corner of the world. The initiatives of giving that he launched were transformed into enduring, active institutions that continued to provide support to those in need, building schools, hospitals, water networks and basic infrastructure in dozens of countries. For this reason, the name of Zayed became associated in the minds of millions with the meanings of goodness, relief and hope.
When we contemplate Sheikh Zayed's legacy today, what comes to the fore is a comprehensive system of human values whose importance only grows amid the complexities of the contemporary world. Sheikh Zayed, may God have mercy on him, carried a vision founded on tolerance, coexistence and respect for cultural and human diversity.
He saw in dialogue between peoples a path to stability, understanding and the building of a safer, more prosperous future. The UAE has therefore remained a global model, embracing hundreds of nationalities and cultures in an environment of mutual respect and a shared sense of belonging to a society that believes in the human being, his worth and his dignity.
This vision extended to encompass the relationship between human beings and their land and environment. Sheikh Zayed's name became linked to afforestation projects, the protection of wildlife and the conservation of natural resources, rooted in a deep conviction that development and the environment are partners in shaping the future.
From these human and environmental values was formed the exceptional standing that Sheikh Zayed occupies in the consciousness of peoples, where generations inherit stories of his generosity, his wisdom and his noble stances, and invoke his life as a model of a leader who left a lasting imprint on the lives of people.
They carry him in their memory with sincere love and enduring loyalty. May God have mercy on Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may God rest his soul, and may He perpetuate for the United Arab Emirates the blessing of faithfulness to his path, and preserve for this nation its wise leadership and its noble people, so that the values planted by the Founder remain present in the consciousness of generations, lighting the way as they lit it from the very beginning.
