New York State Police intensified their security presence following a shooting incident at the famous Times Square, which caused widespread panic and led to a stampede among passersby.

Police said one person had been detained in connection with a violent altercation that broke out at Times Square on Thursday, which left one person stabbed and prompted others to flee for cover after shots were fired.

A 26-year-old man was stabbed shortly before 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of West 45th Street and Eighth Avenue, and was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

During the armed confrontation, a 17-year-old boy is suspected of having fired the shots. He was apprehended and taken into police custody, while charges against him remain under consideration. Authorities confirmed that the shooting did not result in any injuries, with the only injury stemming from the stabbing rather than the gunfire.

Footage from EarthCam surveillance cameras showed a group of men at the scene, with one of them dressed in black and pointing a firearm before fleeing.

One weapon was recovered at the scene, while the precise connection between the stabbing and the shooting had not been immediately established.
