Russia launched a new ballistic missile attack overnight on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, authorities announced in the early hours of Tuesday, as several explosions were heard across the city centre.

Ballistic missiles are among the most difficult to intercept due to their high speed. Local authorities said fires broke out in at least 2 areas, some caused by falling missile debris.

The attack came shortly after a number of members of the "Coalition of the Willing" — which comprises more than 35 countries supporting Ukraine's defence against the Russian invasion — launched an initiative in Paris to strengthen Ukrainian air defence capabilities.

Ukraine has been defending itself, with Western support, against Russia's full-scale invasion for more than 4 years.
