Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has hit back at what she described as "unjustified and meaningless" attacks by US President Donald Trump, after he repeatedly claimed she had "begged" to take a photo with him at the recent Group of Seven summit in France.

Responding on her Instagram page to Trump's accusation, which he posted on his Truth Social platform, she said: "These ongoing and unjustified attacks make no sense." She added: "Being your friend has certainly not helped my popularity," before concluding: "I suggest you focus on your own popularity."
