Costa Rica's security forces evacuated President Laura Fernández on Friday after an explosion was heard during a visit she was making to an illegal mining area, according to footage broadcast on television.
Armed protection agents quickly ushered Fernández into a vehicle after the blast, whose nature remained unknown, as appeared in the television footage. The president later confirmed to journalists that she was unharmed, describing what happened as "something like what you see in the movies."
