A British search and rescue team has been deployed to Venezuela, where the death toll from devastating earthquakes that struck on Wednesday has risen to nearly 1,000 people.

The team of 68 personnel, drawn from fire services across the country, departed RAF Brize Norton on Friday, accompanied by six specialist search dogs and humanitarian sector staff, according to British news agency PA Media.

Wednesday's twin earthquakes, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, were among the most powerful to strike Venezuela in more than a century, and were felt by residents across the region.

Local authorities reported that 920 people had been killed and 3,360 others injured in the earthquakes, with the toll expected to rise.
