The death toll from two powerful earthquakes that struck the Venezuelan capital Caracas and surrounding areas has risen to 920, while the United Nations has estimated the number of missing at more than 50,000.

The United Nations said in a statement that rescue teams from at least 17 countries are participating in search operations for survivors, as Venezuelan authorities declared a state of emergency across the country.

The two earthquakes are among the most powerful to hit Venezuela in more than a century. Many buildings in the affected areas have been evacuated, and the impact of aftershocks has extended to distant regions, including the Brazilian Amazon.
