From the graduation stage to the stage of challenge, Thani Jumaa Al Shahi stood to encapsulate a journey of triumph over disability — a triumph of will that forged achievement and turned dreams into reality.

When he took the microphone to deliver the graduates' address at the University of Sharjah's graduation ceremony, he was not speaking merely as a graduate; he was recounting a journey that began with determination and physical challenge and ended with a dream fulfilled.

Al Shahi's words from the graduation platform carried a message that reached far beyond a university degree: that willpower recognises no barriers, and that equal opportunity is capable of producing exceptional stories of success.

Al Shahi, who graduated from the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences with a degree in sociology, chose that field because it was the closest to his own personal experience.

Having a motor disability made him more acutely aware of the challenges faced by people of determination in society, and more firmly convinced that changing societal attitudes begins with understanding, scientific research, and raising awareness. He therefore seeks to apply his specialism to the study of social issues relating to people with disabilities, and to contribute to advancing their inclusion and empowerment across various fields.

He affirms that what he has achieved would not have been possible without the supportive environment provided by the United Arab Emirates under its wise leadership.

Beyond the university's walls, Al Shahi continues to build his achievements as a player in table tennis with Al Thiqa Club for the Disabled. He has participated in international and continental championships and has succeeded in winning several medals. The Paralympic Committee also selected him to represent the country at a sports conference in Germany — a milestone he describes as a moment of immense pride, as he carried the name of the UAE and Sharjah before the world and came to understand that an athlete represents not only himself but his homeland, his identity, and his values.

Al Shahi believes that graduation is not the end of the road but its beginning. His ambition today is to place his knowledge and expertise at the service of his country, and to secure a job opportunity that enables him to give back to the emirate that made him a model who believes that people of determination do not wait for sympathy so much as they need trust and faith in their abilities.

Between the graduation stage and the podiums of victory, he continues to write a story that affirms success is not born of ideal circumstances, but of the determination that finds those who believe in it and give it the opportunity to advance.
