Sharjah has inaugurated a new phase in its journey towards a circular economy and environmental sustainability, with the launch of the Integrated Central Waste Management Complex project in Al Dhaid city. The strategic step redraws the emirate's waste management system in line with the latest international standards, and establishes an advanced infrastructure serving seven municipalities across the Central and Eastern regions through an integrated system encompassing sorting, treatment, recycling, material recovery and waste-to-energy conversion — reinforcing efficient resource use and cementing the emirate's standing as a leading model in sustainable development.
The project was launched with the signing of a construction and operation contract for the Al Dhaid Central Complex between the Department of Municipal Affairs and Bee'ah, making it one of the largest environmental projects in the emirate. The signing ceremony was held at Bee'ah's headquarters in the presence of Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaydan Al Ketbi, Chairman of the Department of Municipal Affairs.
Also in attendance were Sheikh Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of the Department of Municipal Affairs, alongside Khaled Al Huraimel, Chief Executive Officer and Vice Chairman of the Board of Bee'ah, and Fahad Ali Shahail, Chief Executive Officer of Sustainability, as well as the chairmen of municipal councils and directors of the emirate's municipalities.
Sultan Mohammed bin Huwaydan Al Ketbi affirmed that the project embodies Sharjah's vision for building an integrated sustainable waste management system, and reflects the convergence of efforts between government entities and specialised national expertise, in support of the targets of the national sustainability agenda.
He added that the project elevates municipal services and provides a healthy, sustainable environment for future generations. Sheikh Engineer Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Qasimi explained that the project represents a qualitative leap in advancing joint municipal work, through the establishment of advanced infrastructure employing the latest engineering and environmental solutions — raising the efficiency of sorting, treatment and safe waste disposal operations, and achieving sustainable environmental and economic returns that enhance quality of life across the emirate's cities.
