The National Space Science and Technology Center at United Arab Emirates University has announced the successful launch of the 'LunaNav-1' satellite, the first Emirati satellite specialising in satellite navigation technologies.
The 'LunaNav-1' project, supported and funded by the UAE Space Agency, comes within the framework of ongoing national efforts to advance scientific research, technical development, and innovation in the space sector.
The launch represents an important step in the journey to develop future space navigation technologies and enhance national capabilities in space science and technology.
Following the successful launch, the satellite commissioning and initial orbital operations phase has begun, encompassing systems health verification, establishing communication with the satellite, and initiating a series of operational tests to confirm systems readiness to achieve the mission's scientific and technical objectives.
'LunaNav-1' is the first phase of a future vision to develop a satellite navigation system operating in low Earth orbit.
The satellite adopts a CubeSat design, serving as a technology demonstrator for testing future navigation concepts and technologies.
The mission aims to broadcast signals similar to those of global navigation satellite systems within the L5/E5 and S frequency bands without causing any interference with existing systems, in addition to validating transmitted signals and receiving them via ground stations, and testing the efficiency of onboard orbital determination and timing synchronisation software.
The mission also contributes to developing the capabilities of low Earth orbit satellites to provide more accurate and efficient navigation services; these orbits' proximity to Earth's surface enables improved signal quality and reduces some of the challenges associated with conventional systems operating in higher orbits.
'LunaNav-1' embodies the efforts of the National Space Science and Technology Center at UAE University in developing advanced space technologies and building specialised national expertise, through the execution of research and engineering projects that strengthen the United Arab Emirates' standing among leading nations in the space navigation sector.
'LunaNav-1' marks a significant milestone in the National Space Science and Technology Center's journey towards advancing scientific research, innovation, and technical development in the space sector.
Through this mission, the Center contributes to exploring the next generation of satellite navigation technologies, while enabling Emirati engineers and researchers to develop the capabilities needed to build future space systems.
This achievement reflects a commitment to translating scientific knowledge into impactful technologies that support the United Arab Emirates' ambitions in the field of space.
