A delegation from Dubai Municipality visited the emirate's first vertical farm of its kind located inside a residential tower, developed and operated within Mira Tower at Al Habtoor City in the Business Bay district, in accordance with innovative standards aligned with Dubai's sustainability and quality-of-life objectives.
The visit reaffirms Dubai Municipality's commitment to encouraging the adoption of modern agricultural solutions and its dedication to continuously strengthening food safety and sustainability within urban environments, in order to provide the highest standards of quality of life.
The delegation, which included officials from the Food Safety Department, was briefed on the farm — established by Urban Agritechs with the support of Al Habtoor Group — including its operational mechanisms, environmental control systems, food safety standards, and the technologies used in irrigation, lighting, and plant nutrition.
Adel Al Karani, Director of the Food Safety Department at Dubai Municipality, affirmed that the municipality will continue its efforts to promote and support innovation in the food sector, encourage projects that contribute to raising the efficiency of local production, and provide safe and fresh food options for residents, in line with Dubai's vision of enhancing the resilience of its food security system and cementing its status as a leading city in adopting sustainable and innovative solutions and smart urban farming technologies.
Al Karani said: "The vertical farm project in Mira Tower is among the innovative modern agricultural projects that integrate with new and sustainable urban standards, and it represents an opportunity to replicate the experience in future real estate developments."
The project is based on producing fresh leafy vegetables in underutilised areas of residential towers, enabling residents to order products directly from the farm without going through the traditional supply chain — which includes transport, storage, and display. The system allows tower residents to place purchase orders for leafy vegetable products from the company, with delivery arriving in a short time.
By integrating vertical farms into residential areas, these projects contribute to boosting local agricultural production, reducing dependence on imported leafy vegetables, and providing access to wholesome, fresh food year-round — while using less space and irrigation water compared to conventional farming — with the potential to grow other non-leafy vegetable varieties as well.
