The 'Green Charger' initiative, launched by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), represents a pivotal milestone in advancing the shift towards sustainable mobility and cementing Dubai's position as one of the world's leading cities in the green economy and smart infrastructure.

The initiative is gaining growing importance as the emirate accelerates its drive to reduce carbon emissions and support a clean transport ecosystem, in line with national strategies for climate neutrality and clean energy.

Since its launch in 2014, the initiative has achieved notable results, supplying more than 62,000 megawatt-hours of electricity and enabling electric vehicles to travel more than 310 million kilometres — an indicator reflecting the rapid growth in the adoption of electric transport within the emirate.

His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA, stated in comments to Emirates News Agency (WAM) that the Green Charger initiative embodies DEWA's commitment to supporting the vision of the wise leadership in transforming Dubai into a smart and sustainable city, and to strengthening integration between the energy and mobility sectors.

He explained that since the initiative's launch, DEWA has worked to develop an advanced and reliable electric vehicle charging infrastructure in accordance with the highest international standards, encouraging individuals and institutions to adopt low-emission mobility solutions, reducing the carbon footprint and improving quality of life in the emirate.

He added that DEWA continues to expand its charging network and develop its digital services to ensure a seamless and flexible experience for users, supporting the growing number of electric vehicles and reinforcing Dubai's position as a global hub for green mobility and sustainable economy, in alignment with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, the Carbon Neutrality Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Green Mobility Strategy 2030.

Dubai now has more than 2,223 charging points distributed across various areas, encompassing Green Charger stations and stations operated by DEWA-accredited operators, reflecting a continuous expansion of the infrastructure supporting electric mobility.

The number of registered users enrolled in the initiative has reached approximately 23,600, while the network provides an integrated charging system comprising four main types: a wall charger with a capacity of 22 kilowatts for home or workplace use; a public charging station capable of charging two vehicles simultaneously; a multi-use fast charger combining alternating and direct current charging at higher speeds; and an ultra-fast charger with a capacity of up to 150 kilowatts.

DEWA provides an integrated suite of digital services enabling both registered users and visitors to access charging services with ease. A 'Green Charger' account is automatically created upon registration of an electric vehicle with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai, allowing use within just one hour.

In addition, DEWA has introduced a 'Guest User' feature enabling electric vehicle drivers from within and outside the country to use charging stations without prior registration, by scanning a QR code and following simple steps via smart devices.

This advanced digital ecosystem enhances ease of access to charging services and supports the spread of electric vehicles by providing flexible options for users, with the ability to locate charging stations across Dubai through DEWA's website and smart app, as well as 14 other digital platforms.
