The UAE Scientific Club has affirmed the United Arab Emirates' leading position in the fields of innovation and intellectual property during its participation as an international observer at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly meetings, being held in Geneva from 7 to 15 July. The meetings bring together ministers, senior officials, heads of intellectual property offices, and representatives of countries and international organisations to discuss the future of the intellectual property system and its role in supporting innovation and sustainable development.
Dr Issa Al Bastaki, President of the UAE Scientific Club, addressed the opening session, presenting the UAE's experience in entrenching a culture of innovation and strengthening the intellectual property ecosystem, as well as the club's role since it obtained international observer status at the organisation in July 2024 — a status that reinforces its standing as an active international partner in spreading an innovation culture and expanding the horizons of international cooperation.
He affirmed that artificial intelligence is driving a new phase of economic and technological transformation, and that intellectual property has become a fundamental pillar for converting ideas into economic and social value that supports sustainable development and the knowledge economy.
He noted that the club has raised its portfolio to 25 intellectual property rights, an achievement that reflects its success in transforming scientific research outputs into knowledge assets of economic and societal value.
He explained that the meeting's themes — encompassing artificial intelligence, digital transformation, youth and women's empowerment, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, and investment in intangible assets — are aligned with the UAE's vision of building a competitive, knowledge-based economy.
Running alongside the meetings, students Ali Hamid Al Loghani and Hamdan Mohammed Rahma are participating in the accompanying exhibition within the UAE pavilion, led by the Ministry of Economy and Tourism, where they are showcasing their scientific innovations — reflecting the country's commitment to empowering young innovators and strengthening their presence on the international stage.
