United Arab Emirates University has consolidated its position at the forefront of national universities through a comprehensive research system that has contributed to supporting national development priorities and strengthening the UAE's presence on the global scientific research map.
This comes as the university continues to expand its scientific output, becoming the first national university to surpass the threshold of 30,000 research papers indexed in the global Scopus database — an achievement that reflects a journey spanning nearly five decades of investment in knowledge and innovation.
The university's role is no longer limited to producing scientific research; its research output now contributes to developing solutions serving strategic sectors including sustainability, energy, health, artificial intelligence, water, and food security, alongside the humanities and social sciences, in line with the country's directions towards building a knowledge- and innovation-based economy. In recent years, the university has continued to develop its research infrastructure by expanding postgraduate programmes, establishing specialised laboratories and research centres, and strengthening partnerships with international universities and research institutions. This has helped raise the quality of scientific output, increase publication rates in peer-reviewed international journals, and enhance international research collaboration. The university's indicators show that approximately 44% of its research output is linked to sustainability topics, reflecting its approach of directing scientific research towards issues most relevant to the future of development, including the environment, water, energy, food security, climate change, and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals at both national and global levels. Professor Rami Beiram, Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at United Arab Emirates University, affirmed that surpassing the threshold of 30,000 globally indexed research papers represents an important milestone in the university's research journey, and reflects the fruit of a comprehensive scientific system built over many years through supporting researchers, developing laboratories and research centres, and enhancing international cooperation. He noted that the true value of this achievement lies in the scientific impact of the research and its ability to offer practical solutions to challenges facing communities and vital sectors.
He added that the university continues to direct its research investments towards areas of national priority, with a focus on supporting innovation and promoting multidisciplinary research that combines basic and applied sciences with modern technologies, keeping pace with the requirements of the future.
This achievement coincides with the university's progress in global research and innovation indicators, including rankings in sustainability, scientific research, and patents — an indicator that reflects the integration of the research and innovation system within the university and reinforces its standing among leading academic institutions regionally and internationally.
