Her Excellency Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, has received the Marisa Bellisario Award, one of Italy's most distinguished honours, granted in recognition of outstanding women leaders who have achieved exceptional accomplishments in the fields of diplomacy, government, business, science, innovation, culture, and humanitarian work.
The award was presented to Her Excellency during the 38th edition of the Marisa Bellisario Award ceremony, held in the Italian capital Rome, where His Excellency Antonio Tajani, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Italian Republic, presented the honour to her. She thereby joins an elite group of international figures who have left a lasting mark through service to their countries and contributions to global development and cooperation.
The distinction, regarded as one of Europe's foremost awards recognising women's leadership, reflects growing international appreciation for the UAE's model of women's empowerment and their advancement into leadership and decision-making positions. It also embodies the standing the United Arab Emirates has established as an active international partner in supporting dialogue, strengthening partnerships, and achieving inclusive and sustainable development.
Preceding the award ceremony, Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy attended a reception hosted by His Excellency Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic, in honour of the 2026 award recipients — a gesture that underscores the award's high standing at the official, political, and societal levels in Italy, and its recognition of individuals who have made a positive impact nationally and internationally.
This honour comes amid growing momentum in UAE-Italy relations, following the official visit by President Sergio Mattarella to the United Arab Emirates in January 2026, which marked a milestone in the strategic partnership between the two friendly nations.
The granting of the award to Her Excellency Reem Al Hashimy recognises her distinguished career and sustained contributions to diplomacy, international cooperation, and the strengthening of global partnerships, including her role in deepening bilateral relations between the United Arab Emirates and the Italian Republic.
Throughout her career, Her Excellency has played a pivotal role in raising the UAE's profile on the international stage, building strategic partnerships, and fostering dialogue and cooperation among nations and sectors.
She also led and organised Expo 2020 Dubai, which marked a historic milestone in the hosting and management of major global events and set new benchmarks in the field. The Women's Pavilion at the event highlighted the central role women play in driving development and achieving social progress.
This recognition also reflects the achievements of Emirati women, built upon the wise vision of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may his soul rest in peace, a vision that has continued under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the State, may God protect him, who has reinforced the path of women's empowerment and broadened their participation across all areas of national development.
