The United Arab Emirates has affirmed that the ongoing escalation in Al-Obeid and its surrounding areas demonstrates that there is no military solution to the conflict in Sudan, renewing its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and the achievement of an urgent humanitarian truce.
This came in the UAE's statement during the emergency session held by the United Nations Human Rights Council on the situation in Al-Obeid.
The statement reiterated the UAE's condemnation, in the strongest terms, of all violations of international law being committed by both parties to the conflict across Sudan, including the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure.
It called for expanding the scope of the UN arms embargo to cover the entire territory of Sudan, emphasising the importance of ensuring safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to all affected areas.
Meanwhile, the United Nations announced that a convoy contracted with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, which was transporting humanitarian aid, was targeted by a drone strike carried out by the army of Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan near the Tindelti area in Sudan, according to local sources. The attack resulted in the loss of 50 metric tonnes of relief supplies that had been designated for thousands of people in need in South Kordofan state.
UN Secretary-General spokesman Stéphane Dujarric confirmed that the convoy was completely destroyed, warning that thousands of people would be deprived of urgent assistance, and calling on the parties to the conflict to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure and to increase funding to meet the escalating humanitarian needs.
