Lebanon's Civil Defence said Israeli strikes killed at least 16 people on Saturday, hours after a ceasefire with Hezbollah came into effect, with Israel saying its attacks were in response to projectiles fired by the group.

The National News Agency reported that Israeli warplanes and drones struck multiple sites in the south and the Bekaa Valley.

The Israeli army said Hezbollah fired more than 50 projectiles at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon overnight, and an Israeli military official said this prompted strikes on what he described as "Hezbollah targets".

The Israeli army, which controls large swathes of southern Lebanon, described Hezbollah's attacks in a statement as repeated violations of the ceasefire agreement.

It said it remained committed to the ceasefire in accordance with political directives, and that it would respond firmly to any attacks targeting civilians or Israeli forces.
