The Arab League Council at the level of foreign ministers holds today, Monday, a resumed session of its 165th regular sitting in the Jordanian capital Amman, under the chairmanship of the Kingdom of Bahrain, to discuss a number of Arab issues of common concern.
The meeting will discuss approving the appointment of former Egyptian minister Nabil Fahmy as secretary-general of the Arab League, by a mandate from Arab leaders, alongside the appointment of a number of heads of Arab League missions abroad, as well as the coordination of Arab positions on Arab, regional, and international issues.
In the same context, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi reaffirmed his country's commitment to continuing its steadfast support for the role of the Arab League as the essential umbrella for defending the interests of Arab states and strengthening cooperation among them, in fulfilment of the aspirations of Arab peoples for prosperity and well-being.
This came during Al-Sisi's reception yesterday of Ahmed Aboul Gheit, secretary-general of the Arab League, according to presidential spokesman Mohamed Al-Shenawy.
The spokesman stated in a communiqué that the meeting was held on the occasion of the approaching end of Ahmed Aboul Gheit's term as secretary-general, during which the Egyptian president expressed his profound appreciation for the role Aboul Gheit played throughout his tenure and the tireless efforts he exerted to strengthen the framework of joint Arab action and develop the mechanisms of the General Secretariat.
The spokesman added that Aboul Gheit expressed his deep gratitude to the Egyptian president for his constant support for the Arab League and his ongoing commitment to safeguarding Arab national security and protecting Arab interests, commending Egypt's unwavering support for the Arab League's role as a pivotal platform for advancing Arab relations and shared interests.
He affirmed his pride in having worked closely with the Egyptian president and all Arab leaders throughout his tenure at the helm of the General Secretariat, a period that witnessed unprecedented challenges to Arab national security and shared interests.
The spokesman noted that the meeting addressed a number of current challenges facing the Arab security framework, which require enhanced cooperation, coordination, and solidarity in order to build a better future for the people of the Arab nation and to navigate the present delicate phase.
